This photographic series is a tribute to the old sugar mill where I grew up. For many years, from the age of 5 to 21, I lived in Central Dos Rosas. I grew up watching the sugar mill grind and produce sugar, but starting in the 1990s, due to the crisis that Cuba was — and still is — going through, the mill stopped producing sugar and was eventually abandoned. The sugar refinery ceased operations and began to deteriorate.

Over the years, people with nowhere else to live started occupying the crumbling sugar mill, which gradually turned into an improvised and precarious settlement. The series DETRITUS features prints made on bagasse (sugarcane pulp), capturing details of this new, makeshift village that emerged amid the ruins of the once-thriving sugar refinery.
