This year marked the period of recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, it still carried the weight of the great historical pause brought by isolation, when memories of the land where I was born continued to intoxicate me. Although I lived in Miami, USA, my mind constantly flew back to the place where I grew up. From those moments of reflection and memory, Walking Cuba was born.
In Walking Cuba, I revisit my homeland through images that blend memory, irony, and social critique. Using the legs of a woman as a visual thread, the series explores iconic symbols of Cuban identity, reinterpreting them through a conceptual and visually impactful approach. The symbolic use of color, combined with the theatricality of the scenes, transforms reality into an allegorical construction where past, present, and hope for change intertwine. More than a mere testimony, Walking Cuba is a lucid and provocative reflection on the weight of history, identity, and cultural resistance.
Inspired by the visionary work of Laurie Simmons, this photographic series reimagines themes of memory, identity, and transformation.
