
The year 2020 was defined by the COVID-19 pandemic — an unprecedented and extraordinary moment in our history. Across the world, life came to a standstill as we remained confined to our homes. Time became abundant, and with it, memories resurfaced and overtook us.
It was within this context that the Parallel Universes series was born. I revisited my archives, transforming past photographs into new works that weave together memory, space, and time.
Parallel Universes (Cuba) stems from a personal need to reconcile my passion for classical photography with an enduring drive for visual exploration. By juxtaposing images captured in Cuba two decades ago with more recent photographs, the series creates a dialogue between past and present, portraying a society suspended in time by larger structural forces. Each piece fuses technique and experimentation, generating fragmented parallel worlds where two realities intersect. More than a purely aesthetic exercise, this series reflects on memory, change, and the endless search for other possible worlds.

General technique used for all works
Digital photographic composition based on the superposition of two original images:
A base photograph (background) remains almost intact, although relegated to a secondary visual plane.
A second photograph (the protagonist), divided into four vertical panels, floats above it, creating an effect of fragmentation, permeability, and spatial dialogue.
The panels act as “windows” that simultaneously conceal and reveal the underlying scene, generating a play between what is visible and what is suggested.
The final effect is a fusion of visual memories, accentuated by transparencies, cutouts, and differences in focus.
